Description of artwork - Striking watercolour by famous South African artist Eric Byrd (1905 - 1983). The artwork is a portrait of a boy in blue.
The work is signed Byrd '48, lower left. The work is unframed.
Eric Byrd was born in Durban on 18th February 1905. He was taken to England in 1906 and raised in Cardiff, Wales. He studied art and architecture at Cardiff School of Art and Hornsey School of Art in London. He returned to South African in 1936, and became a lecturer at various educational institutions. During the 1940's, Carl Buchner, Hennie Potgieter, Eben Leibbrandt, Douglas Portway and many others were students of Byrd. In 1950 Byrd emmigrated to Montreal, Canada. Eric Byrd died on 5th May 1983, while staying with friends in Grahamstown, South Africa.

Condition - The work is in an excellent condition. The colours are vibrant. The top edge of the paper is stained, due to the artwork previously being stuck down with masking tape. Unfortunately the stain, which is masking tape residue, cannot be removed.
Restoration work completed - The work was treated for acidity and chemically cleaned to remove paper discolouration and foxing. All tapes and tape residue were removed from the back of the work. These areas were chemically treated to reduce staining.
